Xolo Launches 4- inch quadcore Q500 Smartphone for INR 7999/- in India

Xolo expands its Q lineup of phones in India with the new midrange Q500 smartphone. It joins the slew of budget phones that have popped up this month and which will battle it out in this popular price segment for first-tme buyers. The Q500 is priced at Rs 7,999, but there's no word on when it will be available in stores.

Unlike the Q600 or the most recent mid-range Q2000 that feature Mediatek chipsets, the Q500 comes armed with a Qualcomm processor. It is powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 with Adreno 203, coupled with 1GB of RAM. The dual-SIM (GSM + GSM) smartphone sports a 4-inch display, and runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

Yet another sub-Rs 10,000 phone

Here’s a quick look at the specifications of the Xolo Q500:

  • 4-inch display with 480 x 800 pixels of resolution, and pixel density of 233ppi
  • Dual-SIM, 3G, Wi-Fi
  • Bluetooth, GPS with A-GPS
  • 5-megapixel rear autofocus camera with LED flash, VGA front-facing camera
  • 4GB onboard storage, expandable up to 32GB via microSD card slot

Looking at the above specifications, we can tell the phone is not all that powerful. And Xolo has managed to squeeze in a large 2600mAh battery, which promises up to 17 hours of talk time and up to 520 hours of standby time.

In terms of software, you will find some Xolo-made customations and there's a new app called X-TransPic that lets you take a picture of Hindi text and get an instant translation to English. The app can also read back the translated text. Xolo says X-TransPic is coming to all its phones powered by a Snapdragon chipset.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Google Chromebook

Advantages and Disadvantage of Goole Chrome Book
Recently Google launched its two new Chromebooks in Indian market. Dubbed as Acer C720 and HP Chromebook 14, both of these new Chromebooks are now available on Flipkart and various other select Croma and Reliance Digital Stores. The Price of Acer C720 is Rs. 22,999 and HP Chromebook 14 is Rs. 26,990. There are already many other Netbooks and Laptops available at this price range. But they are running Windows or Linux, and the Chromebooks are running Chrome Operating System.
For those who are unaware, Google Chrome OS is a Linux based Operating System which is designed to work purely with web services. That means most of the apps in Chrome OS will require an Internet Connection and it will be good for those users who are using the Internet most of the time. So, Chrome OS is totally different from Windows, that is the reason it becomes difficult for us to decide whether we have to buy a Chromebook or a normal Laptop. Thinking of that, below we are adding the positive and negative points of a Chromebook, which will be helpful for those who are confused whether they should buy a CHromebook or not ?

Google Nexus 5 coming soon in India for Rs. 20,999

Google Nexus 5 came in India

Last time when Google launched its Nexus 4 Smartphone, then it took more than a half year to come in Indian market. But now it seems like it will not happen with the upcoming Nexus 5 Smartphone. From a recent leaked image of Google Play Listing, it seems like Google Nexus 5 will be available in India sooner than anybody expected. However India will only be getting the HSDPA variant, which is not an issue as the LTE coverage in India is very rare. The 16GB of Nexus 5 will be priced at Rs. 20,999, which is lower than the Nexus 4, which was launched for Rs. 25,999. The leaked image also suggests that Indian users will be able to pre-order Nexus 5 starting from November 3. Yet there are no official details regarding this, but we expect to hear more soon. Nokia Lumia 1520 Mobile Review and Specifications

Nokia Lumia 1520

Nokia has taken the wraps off a host of new devices at its event in Abu Dhabi. And the list comes with a bunch of firsts for the company, including a new phablet, the Lumia 1520. The device is notable for the huge display it brings to the table, and is a clear signal that Nokia is bucking up to the competition, all of which have big-display bearing devices to their names.

But that is just the tip of the iceberg for the Lumia 1520, which was earlier known as Bandit. So what has the Finnish smartphone manufacturer packing into the new handset? We took a closer look to find out:

User Interface
Nokia and Microsoft have now come together to give the new phablet a retooled version of Window Phone 8 Amber OS. This time around, the OS has been tweaked for the larger screen, and the most notable difference is the addition of a third column to the Live Tile home screen. The new three columned UI is aimed at devices that comes with 5-inch or bigger screens with a resolution of 1,920x1080 pixels, meaning that current Windows Phone 8 users might not see the biggest changed that the latest update has in store.
The phablet comes with a new 3 columned UI

The OS has been tweaked a bit to look better for the eyes. The company has now shrunk the fonts by 83 percent for 6-inch screens. The font size on handsets falling in the 5-inch to the 5.9-inch range will remain the same size, though. You can also see more information being displayed in certain apps like email, which now comes with two preview lines. New Lumia 1520 users can also close apps by closing the X button that now pops up in the multi-tasking window. You can also get a new Driving mode, which is an enhancement that uses Bluetooth to determine if you’re driving.

Cellular connectivity
The 1520 comes with support for all usual suspects. Packed into the device is support for 2G, 3G and 4G LTE, although we don’t know the exact bandwidths. The handset makes use of a micro-SIM card, and users will have the ability to surf the web on HSPA+ speeds in India.

Display
The highlight of the Lumia 1520 is definitely the massive 6-inch capacitive display with full HD resolution. The 1080x1920 pixel resolution results in a pixel density of 267ppi, which is pretty good overall. The company has taken a lot of effort in reducing screen reflectance with a polarised filter called ClearBlack Display. This is an effort to cut down reading glare in direct sunlight and also to help keep light bounce back to a minimum indoors.
The 1520's massive 6-inch display

Form factor
At the 209g, the Lumia 1520 definitely seems lighter than the rest, and easily beats the likes of the HTC One Max, the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 or the Sony Xperia Z Ultra in terms of weight. This is surprising, especially when you consider the display size. The handset measures 162.8x85.4x8.7mm, which may feel a bit big for some users.

In terms of design, the new phablet definitely looks slimmer than many other devices in the same category. It seems pretty clear that Nokia has worked hard to keep the new device as proportionate as possible. This approach has also extended to the rear of the phablet. While the device comes with a good sized camera, the mount only protrudes a little from the back, and comes with a sloped-up lip. The company is rolling out the device in a range of colours, including glossy red, matte black, matte white and yellow.

Wi-Fi
The 1520 gets most of the features when it comes to wireless connectivity. Apart from Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n as well as dual-band, the device also comes with DLNA and Wi-Fi hotspot support, which is too be expected, looking at the current smartphone trends.
Despite the size, the device comes with pretty slim dimensions

Chipset and graphics
One of the most noteworthy parts of this phablet is the quad-core processor that it runs on, the first of its kind from Nokia and on the Windows Phone platform as well. The device comes with Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 800 clocked at 2.2GHz, coupled with 2GB of RAM. The hardware essentially put the 1520, processor-wise, in the same league as Sony’s recent phablet release, the Xperia Z Ultra.

Internal storage
The 1520 comes with 32GB of internal memory, which can be expanded by another 32GB via a microSD card slot. The design for the microSD card slot will now ensure that you don’t need to open up the rear panel to put in additional memory. Right above the micro-SIM card slot, you will now find the SD card slot, which should be pretty convenient for users. The 64GB total memory should definitely be sufficient for most users who want to use the 6-inch screen for watching videos on-the-go.

Cameras
Nokia has packed in a 20-megapixel primary camera with the Lumia 1520. The new device comes with Carl Zeiss optics as well as the PureView technology that the company has been making a name for itself with. The camera also comes with optical image stabilisation as well as dual-LED flash, a change from the xenon flash seen in the recently launched Lumia 1020. Also packed in is a BSI sensor, a 2.4mm aperture, 16:9 aspect ratio and 26mm focal length.
A massive 20-megapixel camera comes with the new phablet

The 1520 is also going to come with a new Nokia Camera app, which roughly looks like the Nokia Pro cam app seen in the 1020, with onscreen controls that can help to control everything down to the exposure ratings and so on. The camera app on the 1520 also comes with a shortcut to the Nokia Smart Cam app. This basically means that the user can tap an onscreen button to quickly get to the camera’s tools, including group photos as well as some action modes. The phablet also comes with a front camera, although there are no details about the same yet.

Sensors
Like most other smartphones that have been rolling out this year, the 1520 comes with an accelerometer, a gyroscope, a proximity sensor as well as a compass.

GPS
The new Nokia phablet comes with GLONASS as well as assisted-GPS for the user. Keeping in mind the current smartphone trends, these features have increasingly become a must in high-end releases.
Nokia's new announcement seems to be a good deal

NFC
The 1520 comes with NFC support, a good call considering all the peripherals that are making use of NFC support like speakers and so on.

Battery
The new device comes with a non-removable 3400mAh battery. Given the specs, the battery choice seems to a healthy one. The company has said that the device will give a stand-by battery time of 780 hours and up to 25 hours of talk time. Until we get our hands on the device, though, it will be tough to validate these claims.

The Bottom Line
The Lumia 1520 definitely comes with some top-of-the-line features. And Nokia is selling it like a premium device. The official launch price of the device has been set at $749 (Rs 46, 190). Compared to the company’s earlier smartphones, though, the 1520 is definitely a whooper, and the dimensions suggest that this will be one slim gadget. The massive screen, latest processor as well as the camera specifications makes the new phablet one of the most advanced Windows Phones we have seen so far. The device could also currently be one of Nokia’s most expensive offerings to the market.

The device scores well against other phablets in terms of design. Phones with big displays are currently doing pretty well, especially in the Indian market, so it makes sense for Nokia to take its first step into this arena. While the device scores will in terms of hardware, it is the operating system that may cause some issues for the sales of the device. While most other phablet devices in the market come with the ever-popular Android, only time can tell the Windows Phone-powered Lumia 1520 will shape up against the competition.

Apple iOS 7 Review

This month has been a busy one for Apple. Apart from pushing out two new devices, the company also unveiled a completely new OS for its mobile devices, iOS 7.

While it has been a while since iOS 7 has been launched with pages after pages having been written about it, the only way to really test a new OS is to see how it functions over a span of time. While Apple has managed quite a few good things with the new OS, revamping the look its devices has had since 2007, in the process of testing we came across a few bugs that may need Apple’s attention in the not so distant future.

Be that as it may, there are quite a few things going for iOS 7 and we would be wrong to short change the work been done here. So what has changed? How is it different from iOS 6? What are the problems? Read on to find out:
The new and improved iOS 7

Design
Welcome to the era of colour. Apple, apart from its brightly attired iPhone 5c, has also dipped its new OS in a lot of colour. You can find bright, saturated hues everywhere, and the difference is most notably seen in the new “flat” app icons. Gone are the glossy, bubble-like app launchers that you are used to in earlier versions of iOS. The changes that the new app avatars bring are good, for the most part. The camera app, instead of showing a random lens image, now comes with an icon of, well, a camera. Other apps, however, seem a bit confusing. The Game Center app icon, for example, is just a bunch of muti-coloured bubbles. The Photo Gallery too, comes with a random colour wheel that doesn’t clearly show the purpose of the app.

Perhaps the most useful change that we found useful to the interface is the introduction of multi-page folders. When folders were first introduced in iOS 6, the option helped to reduce the clutter and limit the home screen. The new OS now lets users put all their apps and folders onto a single screen. While folders were previously able to hold only 16 apps, iOS 7 now allows them to hold a nearly-infinite number of games and apps. Up to 9 apps are displayed on any one page in the folder, and users have the ability to scroll through several sub-pages by swiping to the left or right. This should especially be useful for users who have quite a few mobile gaming apps on their devices.

The new, flat design that we were talking about on the app icons has been extended to all core apps. With solid colours and simple fonts, navigating menus has become a lot simpler. The play of brightly coloured text on a white backdrop definitely helps to highlight important information.

The use of blurred, translucent shapes is another feature Apple has worked into the new design. Folders, dropdown menus and even volume animations can be seen with a blurred out view of your device’s wallpaper. This only bothered us while watching a video, though. While adjusting the volume settings, not only did the volume controls obscure the top part of the screen, but the rest of the display also showed a blurred out view of our wallpaper.
Apple i0S 7 Review
The design of the OS has been changed significantly, and the new control panel (right) is damn useful

Another element a lot of people are talking about in iOS 7 is the parallax effect on the home screen. Using the iPhone’s motion sensors, the new OS moves your wallpaper a bit based on the tilt and angle of the device. While the effect was cool in the first few hours, it tends to get distracting and seems like a pointless use of the processor. Users, fortunately, can disable this from their accessibility settings.  There are many other minute changes that overall give the new OS a new sense of style and usability.

The Control Center
One of the most important additions in our book is the Control Center. This is a new dropdown interface that gives quick access to some of the most important features users need on their iPhone. Now, instead of exiting the current app and going into the Settings menu, users can easily access AirPlay mode, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Do Not Disturb and the screen orientation lock from the Control Center. And the feature can easily be accessed by swiping up from the bottom of the screen. It also provides a shortcut to control the screen brightness, music playback controls and volume levels.

The feature also comes with a flashlight option to activate the rear LED flash, as well as shortcuts to the clock, calculator and camera apps. The only complaint that we had with the Control Center is that it cannot be customised. The concept of a Control Center is not new though, as Android users have had a similar feature for years. It is good to see, though, that Apple is finally fusing some of the better features of other operating systems into its own.

Siri 2.0
Apple’s voice assistant software, Siri, comes with a bunch of new features with iOS 7. Siri can now pull out information from Wikipedia, display the most recent tweets from a specific account and even give you the definition of a word from the Internet. Simple commands like “Rage Meaning” work best. Performance has also been worked on a lot, with Siri picking up inquiries faster and more accurately. There were still instances, though, where it felt slow or came up with wrong results. All is all Siri feels more useful on iOS 7 but still remains a novelty feature. The lack of third-party app integration is still one of the biggest problems that the voice assistant faces.

Multitasking
iOS 7, thankfully, comes with a new app switching view. In the past, the interface only came with a small, expanded row of icon on the bottom of the screen. Now, the new multitasking view takes up the entire screen and presents, not just the icon, but a snapshot of the app’s interface. The change doesn’t just increase the visual appeal, but also helps for quick reference. So when you are typing out an important mail and need to refer to some other information, you can quickly go to another window to pick it up. Multitasking itself has been improved at the OS's core level. Apps can now not only run in the background, but they can also be refreshed without having to manually open up the app. This is managed from the Background App Refresh in the Settings.
The new multitasking menu takes up the entire screen

AirDrop for instant file transfers
Apple has now introduced its wireless peer-to-peer file sharing feature, AirDrop, to iOS 7. The feature basically allows users to directly connect with other devices and transfer files wirelessly. While the feature, on the Mac, was a simple drag-and-drop solution, it seems to be a bit different on iOS. Photos, videos, contacts and other sharable data from a first or third-party app can be shared to another device sporting iOS 7 via AirDrop. Users can also make their device detectable to any nearby user, restrict visibility to only feature people in their contact list, or disable the feature entirely. The feature can easily be accessed from the Control Center. When you want to send off a file, users who are nearby will pop up on your device as icons within the share-interface. Transfer of images and contacts happen almost instantaneously. This feature, unfortunately, is only accessible for iPhone 5 and above users.

Another really cool addition that Apple has come up with is iTunes Radio. While the new feature is still US-centric, it is still quite nifty. It’s a free streaming radio that builds and puts together customisable radio stations for users to get their choice of music from. And users also have the option of picking up the songs straight from the app if they want it in their playlist. While there are plans to expand the reach for the features to other countries, there is no official word yet if India is on the list.
